New: The Des Kelly Collection

Hi everyone!

Hope you're all well. I just wanted to let you know we have a collection of incredible industrial photographs taken by Des Kelly in the 80s and 90s. Des Kelly was born in Durham City in 1922 and lived there all his life, apart from wartime service in the Royal Navy. He worked as a technician in the University of Durham for 35 years. A keen photographer, in the 1970s and 1980s as the historic industries of the County started to close, he wanted to record them before they were gone forever. He continued to record changes in both the County and the City until his death in 1999.

Houghton Colliery, 1981

The photographs mainly cover the collieries and various industrial pockets of Durham just before and after closure. They have been provided by Des' son Andy, who has scanned in the negatives at the highest quality. We're incredibly privileged to host these photographs, and remain under the ownership of Andy so please do not reuse without permission.

We hope you enjoy. You can click the button below to view the Photo Archive page.
