HER Description

NEHL - Winlaton's own bullring is said to have been located on the grounds of St Paul's. The Winlaton Local History Society states bull baiting took place here until 1827, quite literally just before the church was built.

There is no mention of this bullring in local newspapers, and the earliest map of the area is the tithe plan of 1836. It is, however, in a perfect area given it was adjacent to the village centre which included a pinfold and well.

Detail concerning the site is scant as it was converted so early.

Ordnance Survey

You can see the bullring was perfectly situated in the centre of the village. It was still being used 11 years before this survey which shows the church and rectory.

Winlaton township (Winlaton parish) plan dated 1838, scale 4 chains. Surveyed and partly taken from old surveys by Thomas Bell, Newcastle upon Tyne
