NEHL - Witton Gilbert was home to a bowling green and tennis court in the centre of the village from at least the 1930s until the advent of the bypass in the latter half of the 20th century. They were situated opposite the infant school and near the Labour Hall, and featured its own pavilion on the north east corner of the site.

Sadly there are few known photographs of both sports grounds, however they can vaguely be seen on aerial imagery just after WWII. They were connected by a footpath which had existed for at least a century prior. The bypass swallowed up much of this land at the south end of the village and our site was expended for this.
