HER Description

NEHL - A ball alley was constructed on the grounds of Sunderland Barracks, presumably for the use of Handball or a similar sport. It appears to be an enclosed open space with two walls around 20 metres long on the south western corner of the barracks. The barracks were opened in 1794 so was likely incorporated into the construction, and came out of use as late as 1910 when it was decommissioned.
