Silksworth Colliery AFC (1892 - 1903)

HER Description

NEHL - The association football club made up of pit workers from Silksworth Colliery played in one of the fields adjacent to the Colliery in, on the crossroads between New Silksworth and Silksworth Lane. The club was active between at least 1892 and 1903, playing in the local Wearside League alongside such clubs as East End Black Watch and Sunderland West End. Records indicate the ground was very close to the public house, and likely means the pub was used as changing rooms and facilities. They may have also used tents, as per practice of teams at the time.
