South Hetton Cricket and Bicycle Club

HER Description

NEHL - A cricket ground (with an adjoining bicycle track) were laid here in the very late 1870s or 1880 for the use of South Hetton Cricket & Bicycle Club (often better known as South Hetton CC). The ground had a small pavilion on its eastern side.

The club held annual sports festivals on the ground, featuring amateur bicycle races and cricket matches. Those in the 1880s were likely held in the cricket field before a bicycle track was laid.

South Hetton CC still operate, though on a separate ground on Front Street.
