HER Description

NEHL - A football ground was situated on the eastern periphery of Sacriston between at least 1908 and the 1970s when this area was developed housing. It was a modest affair, with a small pavilion on the south west wing of the pitch. It was likely a fenced off patch of maintained grass.

The ground was most likely home to Sacriston United, the village's principal team in the 1910s. They formed around 1908 and played in the Newfield and District League along teams like Marley Hill, Pelton Old Boys and East Stanley Athletic. The team were still playing into the 40s, and at this time were part of the Durham Central League against Lanchester Rangers, Burnhope Athletic and Stanley United.

The ground is still extant by the 1960s, but was soon consumed by residential development.
