Greenside Bowling Club

HER Description

NEHL - The green for Greenside Bowling Club was a mid 20th century green , built by 1949 but potentially opened in 1940. At this stage, the village played in the Tyneside Senior League against teams such as Vickers-Armstrong and Seghill.

The Green was sandwiched between the cricket ground and institute, and likely connected to the latter. The ground can be seen on an aerial photograph from 1959, with an incredibly neat boundary and the pavilion on the south side facing the main road. The land was quite clearly landscaped also which is not as obvious on ground level.

The club sadly folded in 2019 (https://www.facebook.com/CrawcrookGreensideClaraValeNews/posts/greenside-bowling-club-update-the-greenside-bowling-club-has-sadly-decided-to-di/2864536843581010/), much like many other local bowling clubs, but the green is still in fairly good nick if anyone decided to revamp it. Sadly as such, bowls is a declining sport as the generations who took it on as hobbies pass.
