Ryhope Cricket & Football Club, Ryhope Villa (1901 -)

HER Description

NEHL - A football ground stood just outside Ryhope village on Burdon Lane from the late 19th century until the 1900s. It was probably the home ground of Ryhope Villa, a football and cricket club which gained this name in 1901, having previously being called Ryhope Football & Cricket Club. Ryhope Villa were fairly successful during their short life, winning the Durham Aged Mineworkers Cup at Kelloe against Stanley United in 1904.

There was also a Ryhope Colliery FC at this time which may have played at this ground too, as well as Ryhope Wanderers in the early 1890s.

The ground had a pavilion (perhaps from their cricketing days. The streets which have now been developed over the area still follow the same boundary as the old farmland and football ground.
