Tynemouth Rifle Club

HER Description

NEHL - A rifle range was located on 51 Nile Street from 1914. Tynemouth Rifle Club used the site, who also made use of Billy Mill rifle range north west of here (https://www.northeastheritagelibrary.co.uk/sports-archive/ns02/billy-mill%2C-rifle-range).

It was named The Borough of Tynemouth Rifle Club, and formally opened in September of the year above. It was formed in connection with the Tynemouth Training League, and was inaugurated by the Mayor Henry Gregg. The mayor fired the first shot at the range scoring a bullseye "amid applause". 24 targets featured.

The first competition here was held on the 23rd December 1914 with over 100 members of the club taking part. The shooting throughout was of a "very high order", with 20% of competitors scoring the full possible points.
