HER Description

NEHL - The Two Bay Horses, also known as the Horse Bay Inn, hosted Quoits matches in the 1890s. An early reference is in 1893, when a home match was played between the proprietor William Richardson and Edward Hall of North Bitchburn. It was a 10 yard ground on clar with 3 inch pins and 41 chalks up for £10 a side. 6/4 was laid on the latter who was eventually defeatured by 4 chalks, and the return match was to be played at the Eagle's Tavern in North Bitchburn. There were undoubtedly further games, however given this was a handicap it was advertised to the wider region. It was certainly played in the rear yard backing onto the small field now occupied by housing.

History of the Two Bay Horses:
This is the last pub to have closed in Hunwick - the Two Bay Horses. I’m interested in that corner indentation. Looks too small to have featured a door so must be decorative alongside those beautiful lintel ornaments which are sadly lost.

The Three Bay Horses looks to have been a proper coaching inn with the arch still in situ to the rear, especially given the name. The first reference I find of it is in 1893 when it was used as an auction house for property sales in the area. I’m sure it’s older though, but isn’t labelled as public house in the 1850s.

Other than that though, I have to admit there’s seldom reference to the pub. The photo from below is from the early 60s, so appears to have closed in the 50s. It’s now a private residence but retains that charming little corner decoration.
