East Hedleyhope Rangers

HER Description

NEHL - A football ground was opened by at least the 1890s at East Hedleyhope, and was home to East Hedleyhope Rangers FC in this decade. The football ground was simply an landscaped, flattened pitch in the centre of the village adjacent to the school and institute. There were no formal facilities, with the neighbouring buildings mentioned likely hosting changing facilities and the like.

There is scant reference to the club. A game was played against Esh Lilywhites, and beat them 3-0 in December 1895. Other than this, the team does not feature in any articles or records.

The pitch has still survived though as a recreation ground for the small village, which has also somehow survived. The landscaping undertaken for the creation of the pitch is still evident.
