HER Description

NEHL - Permission was granted by the Derwent Flour Mill Company to Ebchester Bowling Club to hold their annual picnics at a "field beautifully situated at Ebchester, overlooking the River Derwent". As the site was owned by the mill, it is logical to pinpoint this field at the location of Ebchester Low Mill which overlooked the river.

Ebchester did not have a bowling green itself, so sites were presumably leased for the sport. This particular event in 1899 was patronised by 2,000 people, featuring music from the Hamsterley Band as well as a picnic. Other sports were held at their annual picnic including wrestling, football, tug-of-war, Quoits, skipping, running and donkey racing.
