NEHL - A welfare park was opened on the north bank of Willington Dean around the 1920s. Information is, for some reason, scant on its opening but by the 1930s the park featured a bowling green and two tennis courts around its Welfare Institute. This has now been demolished. Mentions of a new institute are made in 1924, when Messrs Straker and Love provided a new site for a gym and recreation activities for children, as well as a large hall for concerts and a plunge bath. This may be the same site pinning it to around 1925 or 1926.
The welfare grounds are clearly seen on aerial photograph in 1942 with a T shaped institute and children's playgrounds. The land was clearly landscaped to accomodate the site. It has since been demolished, with a dirt bike track in its place.
