Durham Curling Club

HER Description

NEHL - A curling pond was constructed on the south side of the Flass Bog in the late 1880s. There was a small outhouse built, presumably for storage of equipment but was demolished when the curling pond closed in the 1900s. The site is labelled as 'old' by 1915.

Various newspaper pieces confirm the existence of a Durham Curling Club in the 1890s. A match took place on 30th December 1892 between Durham and Middlesbrough at the Curling Pond, Shaw Wood. Middlesbrough beat Durham 57 to 48.
