HER Description

NEHL - Both a football ground and cricket ground could be found at Windmill Hill, just west of Craghead, between the 1880s and 1930s as an estimate. The ground first appears on 1890s map as a 'recreation ground', though provides no detail. By the 1910s the site is illustrated with a cricket ground and football ground adjacent to each other, with what appears to be a shared pavilion. The site had been landscaped to provide the facilities, implying reasonable investment was made. The ground had disappeared by the 1940s, reclaimed as moorland or grazing lane.

It is not known which football teams, if any, played at this ground. Craghead United (formed in 1904) played at Hedley Park, but I cannot find sufficient evidence to prove this is Hedley Park. It does appear to be the most likely as matches held here ceased in the 1930s. Craghead United played in the North Eastern League Division II, against teams such as Durham, Seaton Delaval and Walker Celtic
