Boldon Star, Boldon CA, Boldon Colliery Welfare CC

HER Description

NEHL - Boldon Star, a founding club of the Wearside League, presumably played at the ground which still remains adjacent to the site of Boldon Colliery. Boldon Star (also known as Boldon Colliery Star) became part of the league around 1888 with other cluvs such as Sunderland Swifts, East End Black Watch and Kensington.

Boldon Colliery Welfare CC also played at the ground as seen on the photograph below with the colliery as the backdrop. A pavilion stood just behind shot with the football ground on the left. Two bowling greens and two tennis courts were also provided for the betterment of pitmen and their families around the pit village.

Boldon CA still play at the ground which is much amended from its colliery days. The bowling and tennis greens have been converted as an extra football pitch.
