HER Description
Bebside featured its own cricket ground from 1883, which was incredibly short lived with references ceasing in the 1890s.
The grounds were situated behind the Boys School on the Front Street, as per a report on a sports festival held in 1883. A large number of people attended to witness sports put on by the Bebside Cricket Club and the Bebside Temperance Brass Band, alongside a quoits tournament put on. This was very likely to raise funds and boost the profile of the club, which were only established in the March of that year, with a meeting held in the colliery lecture hall with a committee of 15.
One of the few recorded matches was between Hartford and the Bebside Club at this ground in May 1883. It resulted in a Bebside victory by 48 runs. They were never part of a league nor a cup. However, by 1884 they did establish a second club, Bebside Juniors, which indicates the club was in good health and not always on a downwards trajectory. The club had 24 members, so did remain small.
There is, unfortunately, no references of the club going into the 1890s so it is clear they went defunct or simply didn't have the membership to keep running anymore. The ground was never annotated on Ordnance Survey maps, so we can guess the club folded by 1896.
