Magdalene Fields Golf Club

Magdalene Fields is the most northerly club in England, and has just passed its 120th anniversary.

A syndicate obtained an annual rental from the Duke of Northumberland for what was originally a 9 hole course from the Brass Bastion to Pier House, laid upon old pasture lands. It was said in the Illustrated Berwick Journal, 30/04/1903 that the "Berwick people had for many years been endeavouring to get lands for a new gold course". It was intended to be a feeder for the larger course at Goswick, but could be expanded for 18 holes.

It was 1 1/2 miles in length with 9 holes of varied distances between 90 and 500 yards. Gentlemen were to be charged 20s for its use, ladies 10s, youths 10s, schoolboys & girls 5s and temporary visitors 1s a day. 61 people enrolled at this meeting including the Mayor and family. The original course was designed by Willie Park, the Scottish professional (and twice Open winner) whose pioneering dad died in this same year. Willie designed countless courses in Britain as well as Canada and the US.

Almost straight away the club invited players for novice and open handicaps, mixed foursome competitions and against other local teams such as Eyemouth, Alnmouth and Bamburgh. Within 3 years they had gain subscriptions worth £231 in part thanks to the large amount of men staying at the barracks up the road. A clubhouse was constructed on the same site as the present pavilion.

The course was extended to 18 holes in 1914, but for financial reasons reverted back to 9 only 2 years later (presumably WWI didn't help). It however did revert back to 18 in 1974. The committee were unanimously in favour of the extension in September 1973 after years of stewing, and work commenced soon after.
