HER Description

In the great boxing zeitgeist of the interwar period, Berwick's Corn Exchange was utilised for boxing bouts alongside political meetings and other public events. This is in part due to the slump in British agriculture in the late 19th century, so many of these large exchange buildings had to seek new purpose.

The first year I can find it was held was in 1925, when a "grand...tournament was held...before a goodly attendance". It's noted this was the first of its kind in Berwick, and those in charge are to be complimented on the success. Permission was sought by the officers of the Northumberland Fusiliers and the Kings Own Scottish Borderers to hold the card, with proceeds being in air of their charities.

The ring was erected in the middle of the hall with spectators seated around the ring, much like today. For this first competition it was said to be of a fairly high standard, with 30 bouts on the programme from lightweights, welterweights and bantamweights. Many of them were soldiers at the barracks.

Boxing continued into the 1930s, still with a very good attendance. By this time fights were contested between recognised fighters such as Jim Gilmour (who fought at the Olympics also), Pat Sherry, Pat McGoldrie (the singing boxer, belting out 3 songs after his victory no less) and Billy Warwick.

It appears this event came to an abrupt end in 1934, with only intra-barracks fights at the barracks itself advertised. It may be due to their agreement ending as it was still used for markets.
