Spittal Rovers (?)

HER Description

A football pitch was laid above the Spittal Reservoir, owned by the Berwick upon Tweed Corporation, in the 1940s of early 50s. This is something I've never come across surprisingly, given many urban reservoirs are perfect for a laid pitch above them thanks to their flatness and size.

The grounds first pop up on aerial photographs seen below in the early 1950s. It featured modest facilities, and by that simply a small shed & lavatories on the eastern side of the pitch. Though I wouldn't be able to say for definite, there's a decent chance Spittal Rovers played a few games here. They were a club founded in 1884 but sadly folded in 2022.

The pitch remains in use though doesn't appear to be for a specific club.

Proof the pitch was operational in 1951. It was well worn too, with goalposts visible on either side. Source: Historic England Archive (RAF photography) raf_540_611_rp_3316 flown 9 October 1951
