Spittal Tennis Club

HER Description

It is possible these 3 tennis courts behind the Venetian pavilion came into being at the same time as that mentioned in 1928. They were owned municipally for the betterment of the community, though the local tennis club did use the courts as they wished. The club in 1938 had 30 members, and it was noted at this stage there was no clubhouse or pavilion for users, making it a numbing affair on colder days. A pavilion was added by the late 30s/40s on the South Greenwich Road side of the courts.

The Spittal Tennis Club hosted regular tournaments here for both men and women, as well as against local opposition from Berwick.

Sadly, the Berwick Borough Council Amenities Committee gave the green light to replacing the tennis courts with a car park in 1983. This was due to a shortage of spaces after successive seasons of this area featuring a go karting circuit, trampolining and tennis sessions.
