Spittal Tennis Club
HER Description
Spittal featured its own tennis court by the 1910s, with a small patch on lawn adjacent to the sands used for this purpose from at least 1913. The tennis club followed on from its bowling counterparts just a few years after their formation, and I could assume they featured many of the same members. A club was suggested in 1912 though little other detail was provided, but by the next year a number of championships are mentioned as in the offing.
The lawn itself featured 1 court, withy a small shed on its western half surrounded by wooden fencing. Facilities were fairly modest. It was likely for this reason that tennis facilities were moved between the Promenade and South Greenwich Road by the 1950s with a pavilion and room for 3 tennis courts in total. There is no longer any trace of this lawn as a house now occupies the site, though previously occupied by beach chalets.
