Spittal Bowling Club

HER Description

The formulation of Spittal Bowling Club began in 1908, when the Mayor invited members interested to consider forming a Bowling Club in the village. It was said that "anything for the benefit of Spittal was also of benefit to the whole borough". It was in the April of that year that was decision was made, with the Mayor suggesting Spittal as a naked resort with much potential but without much recreation. This provided the vigour to place the green directly on the beach, to add to the offering of some of the best sands in the country.

The club was finally up and running in the November of 1909, with the green fully completed in June 1910. From there the green was said to have been used at least once a day both locally and against their Berwick neighbours. An intra-club championship was established as well as a prize cup. A pavilion was erected in the same year with an overall cost of £400.

Matches were very regularly played against local opposition. Within the first few years there were regular marches against Coldstream & Berwick most notably. For the next 20 years or so the club appear to have remained incredibly popular, with local news outlets reporting weekly on matches, competitions and affairs even during the war.

There was potential for a new green to be laid at Seafield Gardens, however due to cost and affection for the current site this was rejected. A small park was later added adjacent to the club.

The site remains in good use today and is well regarded for its welcome and support - typical of my experience of Berwick every time I visit.
