HER Description
Belsay Cricket Club was established in 1869, and still play on the same field today.
The club cite their establishment in 1869, and the first reference I can find is from 1875. A picnic organised by the Temperance Hotel landlord Mr I Surtees was held on a field adjoining the village, which included a cricket match between the Belsay CC and 22 visitors. Upwards of 200 people attended. A few years late in 1878, a concert was held at the Belsay School Room in aid of the Cricket Club and Reading Society. At this stage there was no pavilion or formal infrastructure at the ground, just a vacant field they likely gained permission to use.
The first confirmation of them having their own field was in 1889, when they held an annual sports event in "the Cricket Field". A mile bicycle handicap was also held featuring various Newcastle and Tyneside clubs. Throughout this time the club generally played local teams unattached to a league such as Cambo, Mitford and Meldon.
Before the 1940s, the team were admitted into the Tyne & District League allowing them to play competitive matches for the first time. This was against teams such as Blaydon, Lemington, Clara Vale and Heworth. This likely also coincided with the construction of a pavilion on the west side of the ground. A pavilion remains on the same site, though I can't suggest if it's the original.
