Bellingham Football Club
HER Description
It is known football has historically been played on the Fair Stead, before any official fixed ground was bedded in by the club. Though rugby predates soccer in the village by some 15 years, the club were properly established by the 1900s and played on various grounds including the Riding Haugh and Fairstead where the golf club was also located. Neither featured any formal facilities as much as using a local church or pub for changing.
It appears Bellingham's own team was short lived, with no references past the 1910s. There is a single fleeting photograph of the team hosted by Northumberland Communities, in a while top and black shorts. As a result, there is limited knowledge on the side and their respective successes.
The Fair Stead was a large enclosure and had been used historically as "the most suitable place to exhibit cattle in at Fair times. A portion of this ground [was] marked off and is used as a public pleasure ground", as noted in the 1850s Northumberland Name Books. It being the public recreation ground only gives credence of its use for sports, and very likely was also used for cricket and the more historic rugby team. However, I've not found any concrete evidence for this.
A match was played here in 1905 between Bellingham and a "selected combination", with a draw of 3-3.
