Bedlington Mechanics
HER Description
Milne Park was home to the Bedlington Terriers throughout its life. The Bedlington Terriers were originally named the Bedlington Mechanics, who were formed in 1949 and first became a member of the lowly Northern Combination League. It appears they formed after the dissolution of Bedlington United, the towns former main team who'd dissolved shortly before the war (https://www.northeastheritagelibrary.co.uk/sports-archive/bedl02/burdon-park). Upon joining the Combination, the Mechanics competed against teams like East Tanfield, Blyth Town, Percy Main Amateurs and Birtley Royal Ordnance Factory.
Milne Park was newly carved for the team, with earlier maps and aerial shots showing a patch of waste land owned by Jimmy Milne, a local entrepreneur. This was combined into one, and a pavilion was erected in the north west corner of the pitch. The site however was incredibly small, and as seen on the postcard below there was little scope for expansion or commercialisation as the pitch swallowed the whole surface area. This also caused issues when they wished to charge spectators, as folk just simply stood beyond the fence and watched as per a newspaper article in 1954. It was cited by the club chairman that some 90% of spectators did so without paying, and though perhaps an exaggeration it certainly stifled their growth.
The Mechanics continued on for the next 12 or 13 years, but had moved from Milne Park to Bedlington Station in 1961. Jimmy Milne rented the land out to the Mechanics but sold much of this land in the early 60s. His shop was sold to the Co-Op, and the football ground became a car park after much deliberation by the council to compulsory purchase the site. However, it was cited at this stage to be wholly unsuitable for sports as noted above, and the Mechanics were making a loss on every game due to the rent. It cost them £25, and they only earned £8 in gate receipts. As such, the Mechanics moved to the Station Welfare Park. Their AGM in 1963 was cited as their last, despite great success in the FA Cup against Whitby Town only a couple years prior. The picture was gloomier in almost every other department.
The club officially disbanded, but reformed under the name Bedlington Colliery Welfare in 1965 and later renamed Bedlington Terriers FC in the very early 80s. The club continue today at the Welfare Park.
