HER Description
Hartford Hall featured their own cricket club in the early 20th century. It was part established and supported by Alderman Richard J Carr, twice Mayor of Morpeth who sadly accidentally drowned in the Wansbeck in 1916. The Hartford Hall team were certainly playing on the field to the south east of the house by 1907, with an engagement against Hartley Hastings in the August of that year. Further matches were played against such teams as Choppington nearby.
In 1908, the ground was improved with a railed boundary, wire netting with the ground levelled. A pavilion with team room, scullery and dressing room was also incorporated in that year which has sadly been lost. At the same time it does not appear they featured in a league, but simply played against local opposition like New Delaval, Mitford, Forest Hall, Amble, Seaton Burn and Bedlington.
It appears the club went defunct at the same time as the start of the First World War, which probably meant it quietly folded and disappeared in the following years. The boundary appeared to remain in the 1920s alongside the pavilion, but there's no mention of formal matches in this decade. The ground appears to have remained in use once Hartford Hall became the Northumberland Miners' Rehabilitation Centre, with the grounds being used for general recreation.
