HER Description

Boxing is first documented at the Clayton Boxing Hall in 1933, when two Birtley Boxers Jim Rose & Young Bill fought Bob Wilkinson (Newcastle) and Bob McKellar (Sunderland) respectively here.

The opening of the hall is a bit of a mystery, but took place in the late 20s or 30s. It possibly opened as a ballroom, but certainly was known as the Clayton Boxing Hall by 1933. From here, matches were well advertised in regional newspapers especially as it was so close to Bedlington Railway Station. Friday nights saw consistent crowds with boxers from across the North East, though a couple of Sunday programme's earned some bad heat from the press given the sabbath. It's also of note a Singapore boxer, Jimmy Crowe, fought here in 1934 though other sources say he was from South Africa or Australia.

Bouts were suspended in 1934, perhaps due to the hot water they found as noted above. It was mooted again in 1937, but cards were property recommenced in September 1938 on Friday nights under the promotership of Mr W Power. The war certainly put an abrupt end to the matches, but a few cards were put on post-war and one offs during the war itself. The Mineworkers' National Amateur Boxing Championships (Northern Division) were held here as well as at Fenham Barracks in 1948. An all-in wrestling and boxing competition was put on for morale in 1942 between locals and RAF lads. In 1955 it held the Northern Division National Coal Board Boxing Championship finals once again, but from there it petered off.

The Clayton Hall was predominantly used for dancing thereafter, as boxing went on to be concentrated down in Newcastle. The Clayton Ballroom was still standing in the 70s, but was demolished for the doctors surgery.
