HER Description

Hollymount was Bedlington United's first ground - the towns principal team in the early 20th century. The team were certainly established by the 1896-97 season as noted in the Blyth News of November of 1896, playing Blyth Star on "The Flat". Holly Mount had previously been used for dog shows and the like - it was a vacant piece of ground at the end of Hollymount Road which also featured the towns Wesleyan chapel and one of the grandest houses in the village.

They first played in the East Northumberland Combination League against such teams as Bates Wanderers, Blyth Thistle, Chirton and Cramlington but very quickly outgrew it and joined the East Northumberland League from 1902. They were later part of the Northern Alliance after winning the league title in the 07-8 season, making the run into the 1910s their zenith years. As a result, the club built a new stand here in 1913 with advertising boards helping to fund the club. During this time the FA Cup was played here, though I haven't ascertained who against. Funnily enough, a let to tender is also put out in 1911 for the field to be used for grazing or hay presumably for the summer months between fixtures.

By 1920, the ground was acquisitioned by the council for housing development, and it was presumably Cornwell Crescent which was built on top of it. Aptly, next door the Bedlington Miners Welfare Recreation Ground was soon built close by. Bedlington United went on to play at Burdon Park until the late 30s (https://www.northeastheritagelibrary.co.uk/sports-archive/bedl02/burdon-park).
