Bedlington Aerial Bicycle Club

HER Description

A 2nd bicycle track at Bedlington was opened in 1893, after a long standing grounds were opened some 13 years prior at Bedlington Station. Their new track is noted to be at Doctor Terrace in 1893, and had attracted 600 spectators one one of their first hears at the site. That same year, it's noted there were around 60 members, putting it in a healthy position.

There is unfortunately very little information on these grounds, partly as they didn't remain after the First World War. However, I do have a sneaking suspicion that before this became a cycling track it was a running ground. There are sprinkles of references in the 1870s to a Bedlington West End Running Ground, which regularly saw races around 100/120 yards. Given the lack of mapping in this era it is difficult to ascertain exactly where, but this site could well be a candidate as it was not developed by the time the cycling ground found itself here.

By the end of WWI the site was vacant surrounded by housing and allotments, and is now covered by housing and Willow Vale care home.
