Beal United

HER Description

Beal United were a short lived football club at the small farmstead preceding the Holy Island crossing. They first appear in 1905 with a local match against Newton-on-the-Sea, and later Scremerston Rovers in the same month.

In 1906 Beal United FC joined the North Northumberland League for a single year against such teams as Tillside and Alnmouth. They did sadly only last one season before dis-uniting in 1907. No reason except "force" is cited for the abandonment, and there were originally plans to indulge in a few friendlies, but "so thoroughly disheartened seem to be the majority of their players that even this scheme had to be abandoned". Certainly not just a money thing then, but there was a short lived revival in the late 1960s. It doesn't appear this lasted very long though.

Though it cannot be said for certain, I imagine this was the pitch they played on. It was an enclosed, level field adjacent to the farmstead where facilities could have been put on for the games. It's also next to the railway station for easy transport.

The site is still part of the farmstead.
