HER Description

NEHL - Newspaper archives show the Demesne fields were used for football fixtures in the 1870s. Barnard Castle FC played most commonly here as well as the students of Gainford Academy. A particular match between these two teams occurred in December 1873, featuring a significant crowd, where Barnard Castle FC beat Gainsford Academy 1-0.
