Bamburgh CC

HER Description

Bamburgh Cricket Club, formed in 1860, utilised the field in front of Glebe House as their first ground. In a report from the Newcastle Journal of 04/08/1860, a cricket match is documented between the Bamburgh and North Sunderland CC with a large attendance who "evinced considerable interest in the game, especially as the Bamburgh Club has only been in existence for a few weeks." The Morpeth St James' Bank was present and played in intervals while the match was proceeding. Its noted the ground was in excellent condition, with the Rev William Darnell, who lived at the home, erecting comfortable tents to fend off the rain. A dinner was provided in the tents after Bamburgh beat their local competitors.

Though it very likely continued to be use, there is seldom reference to the Glebe House thereafter. The club went on to utilise the Castle Links, as they famously do today after reforming in the 2000s.
