Amble Bowling Club

HER Description

An Amble Bowling Club was established in 1911, and a new bowling green which still stands off the High Street was established in 1928. The first bowling club was established in connection with the parish, and made use of the Rectory lawn by kind permission of the vicar.

Amble Bowling Club states themselves their club was formed in 1928, so it may be the case the clubs are separate. This green was at first it was a plain facility with a rectangular green only, though a year later we find in newspaper reports a bungalow club house was unanimously agreed to be built in the same year. There was a balance of over £20 after one year so the club were in a reasonable financial position, allowing for modest expansion of the grounds and was erected in the south west corner. By 1931 however, there was a small deficit, though on the sporting side it had been a good year.

The club soon competed with the Amble Welfare Bowling Club which was founded at the recreation grounds on Acklington Road. This club is still operational however, and there is still a busy itinerary as seen on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100091281795904) which is fantastic to see.
