HER Description

Though entirely speculation, it's very likely the Bowling Green plantation is so named for its historic use as a bowling area. Bowls dates back far beyond the use of rectangular greens and pavilions. It was probably a recreational area used by the Duke of Northumberland to entertain his guests, and we do know the family sympathised with the sport given their keenness to open the bowling club in the town which is one of the oldest in the country.

There is no such indication of the exact site on Ordnance Survey maps, and could well date back to the 18th century. We know bowls was played in the North East at this time thanks to the bowling green off Northumberland Street at Newcastle.
