Alnmouth CC

HER Description

NEHL - Newspapers dictate that Alnmouth Cricket Club played at Alnmouth Links from at least the 1860s until 1967, when the last game was played on the peninsula before moving to Hipsburn.

The very first reference to cricket being played at Alnmouth is in 1861, when the village cricket club played Eglingham CC on a part of the beach. There are copious references to the club at this time facing the various local sites such as Beadnell, Alnwick, Warkworth and Morpeth - the latter stating there was a formal ground which is probably this one. Our golden ticket however comes in another piece from 1861, when a match against Beadnell took place on the Alnmouth Links. The home side saw victory on this day. A further reference in 1861 states a cricket match was played on the links as part of the village's annual holiday - a flower show was held alongside at the boathouse. A piece from 1862 states that an "ampitheatre" was landscaped around the cricket ground and is one of "the most pleasantly situated in the country".

The club played for the last time here against the Old Vinovians, a grammar school old boys team from Bishop Auckland paying their first visit to the village. They featured a nephew of George Duckworth. From the season after, the club played at "The Wickets" between Alnmouth and Hipsburn and continue to do so today.
