HER Description

NEHL - The Red Lion on Northumberland Street is recorded as hosting quoits matches on at least one occasion in May 1881, but very likely more regularly.

The publican, H Rutter, advertised a competition held at the hotel at 3:30pm on the 7th May. The match was very likely hosted in the rear yard accessed by a passage on River Bank Road which still remains. There is sadly no other mention of its use.
