Alnmouth United (?)

HER Description

NEHL - Aerial photography outlines the site of a football ground just off Marine Parade near Alnmouth Links. This is on the modern football ground.

There is no evidence on Ordnance Survey maps to show a football ground was ever here, but photography shows a modest laid out ground with goal posts. It is, however, an ideal common historically for all sorts of village sports to be held so it is not unreasonable to suggest this plot had been used much further back for football and cricket. There is evidence of an Alnmouth Football Club in the 1880s, though references are scant and no detail of the ground is evident and could well be rugby.

Alnmouth United, founded 1901, were the possible tenants of this ground in the mid 20th century. The current ground near Hipsburn does not appear to have been utilised for anything but agriculture until more recently, and the team may have had to move here due to the lease ending on this site.

The aerial photograph does not present any facility, though it is worth noting the team made use of the Schooner Hotel for its functions and AGM's. Facilities may have been provided at one of these.

The ground is no longer used for football.
