Alnmouth Golf Club

HER Description

NEHL - Alnmouth Golf Club was opened in 1869, making it the fourth oldest club in the country. It is first cited in the Alnwick Mercury of 25/09/1869, when this "truly national Scottish game" was introduced by the gentlemen of Alnwick to the links at Alnmouth. They first practised Mondays and Thursdays, with Captain Walker of Alnmouth acting as honorary secretary. Earl Percy was made president, with 30 members enrolled by October.

The first course was reputedly designed by Mungo Park, at this time only 39 from Musselburgh but the first professional based at the course. Despite being a seaman, he went on to win the 1874 Open and posted four further top-10 finishes alongside his design work.

It is noted by the club that women played at the course from around 1881, but formed their own ladies club from 1907. In the late 1920s the Duke of Northumberland consented to an expansion for an 18 hole course stretching up to Foxton Hall where the clubhouse is now based. It opened in 1930 alongside a new limited liability company, and continued the role that the working classes of the village could use the course for free though only the original 9 holes.

The course is still in use today.
