Chilton Moor Cricket Club
HER Description
Chilton Moor had its own cricket club by 1882, and the cricket ground first appears on the Ordnance Survey maps. It was certainly here by 1893, with an application sought to provide water to the ground requiring 100 yards of piping. However, it is very likely to have been the home ground from the outset.
There was no pavilion or club house in the 1890s, so they likely used the local school or one of the chapels or pubs nearby. A club hut was added in the south west corner of the ground by the 1910s. By 1939 however, there are implications of difficulties as a report notes whether the club should fold or not. This was presumably due to the war and the shortage of players. The club president, Mr Stanley Robinson, said it would be a loss to the district if the club was allowed to go down. They had "a good field, and the club was well equipped with a roller, motor mowing machine and cricket materials".
The club continued until the 2010s.
A Chronicle article notes 34 homes were being built on the site in 2019. The field was already disused by this point - https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/chilton-moor-cricket-club-sunderland-15849454
