Description

A shipbuilding yard is depicted on William Daniell's "View of Newcastle upon Tyne, Taken from a Windmill to the East of St Ann's", which provides us an insight into Newcastle at the turn of the 19th century.

The painting is from the perspective of Millers Hill, which is nowadays on City Road close to the old Tyne Tees Shipping Co. offices. Given we know the location, the two ships under construction are located beyond Ropery Bank just east of Swirle.

There are several plausible candidates for who could have owned the yard at this time. The most likely is William Carrs, also spelt Carse. He was a shipbuilder on the North Shore between the 1750s and the 1810s. It's known he built at least a dozen ships here.

The area underwent dramatic transformation from the mid to late 19th century. Therefore, there is likely no trace at all of the yard today.
