Description

Though Hillgate likely had more shipyards previously, one of the earliest yards that can be confirmed at this site is Henry Forster. He had owned a quay at Hillgate in the 1760s, and launched a brig named "Margaret & Winifred" in 1767. This was the largest launch ever at Gateshead.T

The yards here benefitted both from each other, and a thriving supply chain industry of mast and block makers at Hillgate. There was at least two down here at the time, which no doubt made the site more attractive for those considering building.

His attempt at making a profitable building venture was short lived, and business closed a year later when he was declared bankrupt. The site appears partially built on with sawe mills and warehouses by the 1850s, and became a merchant quay by the 1890s.
