Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - A colliery was operated in these woods in the early 19th century. It was closed and disused until around the 1890s, and was reopened as Horsley Wood Colliery until 1924.

It was operated by John Stoker, and was part of a surprising tramway network between the Tyne and a huge tramway to what appears to be a level at Spital, west of North Dunslaw Holm. There is little information concerning this pit as it was fairly minor and only operated for a few years.
