Description (or HER record listing)

A section of a preserved waggonway alignment can be found in Clockburn Wood.

It is part of the old Hollinside Way which connected two waggonways - one at West Whickham and this one near Hollinside, which in turn connected a whole cornucopia of pits around what is now the golf club and Clockburn Lonnen. The lease dates to April 1692, though it is a complex tangle of railways across the site so it's not known exactly when this section was opened. The junction was located near the golf club entrance, and this part appears to be a connection to pits just north of Hollinside.

Within the wood, the embankment is around 7 metres high and part of a culvert can be seen over a small spring.
