Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - The Doctor Pit Waggonway was opened in the 1850s alongside the sinking of the Doctor Pit (https://www.northeastheritagelibrary.co.uk/coalsarchive/n11797/bedlington-colliery). The railway was predominantly single track from the pit pond at the Doctor Pit until it reached the A Pit, where it was absorbed into the network of sidings into Bedlington Station. It was not worked by signals. Given it was single track, it was likely token or scheduled working given it was a private railway as the Bedlington Coal Co. then the NCB until the 60s.
The track was lifted after the closure of the pit, and has since been transformed into the Doctor Pit Park which stretches to the station.
WALKABILITY: ★★★★★
The walk along the old waggonway is perfect on a bright sunny morning. It's well laid and should cause no issues for any casual walker. The waste heaps and woods line each side, though it is to be noted not to walk through here at night as some areas are not well lit. If you're in the Bedlington area, especially with passenger services restarting, do have a walk through.
