Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - A small working could be found on the lane to Howden-le-Wear in the mid 19th century named Fredericks West Pit. This pit is curious having no immediate indicators of a coal working apart from being labelled on the first edition Ordnance Survey map, though the Coal Authority confirm there was a mine entry at this site. There were two buildings, with one likely containing a shaft which has now been covered over. Housing now stands on the site.
