Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - A small coal working was located directly on the crossroads at Dans Castle in the 1850s, between Ironworks Road and Castle Bank. It contained a shaft, pit pond and small ancillary building and was likely a landsale pit, meaning it was exploited for the benefit of local people. There is very little information on this pit, and had vanished by the 1890s as the settlement expanded down to the main Tow Law settlement. Nothing remains of this site.
