Description (or HER record listing)

NEHL - An old coal shaft is illustrated just north of River Deerness near Low West House. This shaft does not appear in the 1861 Ordnance Survey, so it can be presumed it was part of the Sunniside Colliery complex. It is situated to an old pumping engine operated by Hedleyhope Colliery, however both appear to have been constructed seperately.
