Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - An old coal shaft is illustrated adjacent to Old Sunniside and the Black Burn through the 19th century Ordnance Survey maps. It is illustrated as 'old' in the 1850s, so the working dates before this. It is unfortunately not known if this was a local working for the village or as part of a wider network for the nearby collieries, and has since been built over. Coronation Road now stands on top of the shaft.
